The St Nick Project is an annual ministry of caring, through which our faith community seeks to bring the spirit and joy of Christmas to families in our area who are experiencing difficult times by providing donated Christmas gifts to each family member. A traditional, old-fashioned Turkey Dinner and Carol Sing-Along is part of this project.
Helping Hands is a local mission project sponsored by the Mission Team of the church. We help with chores that are getting more difficult to do or ones that you could use a little help doing. The tasks could be washing windows, cleaning gutters, changing storm windows for screens, helping clean closets even cleaning up the limbs from the ice storms. Volunteers are also welcome to join and share their talents God has blessed them with. God calls us to use all our hands in mission and ministry.

General Information
The Effort United Methodist Church Supplemental Food Resource Center (SFRC) is an outreach ministry serving the West End communities (*Effort, Gilbert, Kunkletown, Kresgeville, Brodheadsville, Saylorsburg, Sciota, and Albrightsville).
The Lord inspired us to help feed families going through emergency or other short term situations and who may not be eligible for other local, county, or state programs. We do not ask for proof of need or income. Our only requirement is that families may not come for longer than eight weeks.
Procedures
When you arrive at our Center, we will ask you to read a Welcome letter and complete a brief inventory form and complete your name and address. Additionally, we provide a family with freedom of choice by allowing you to select the foods most needed for your family. In order to receive food, a valid driver’s license or State ID (showing address) is required proving residency within the *West End.
Volleyball is played on Wednesday and Thursday nights at the EUMC pavilion and the Cornerstone pavilion. The league has been around for about 15 years. So far this year there are 14 teams in the league. If you would like information about joining, contact Doug Atherton at westendvb09@yahoo.com
THE EFFORT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH PRAYER GARDEN
The Effort United Methodist Church Prayer Garden began as an Eagle Scout project by Greg Decker, son of Jan and Bob Decker, in June 2001. The project was financed by fund raising, as required by The Boy Scouts of America's guidelines for the Eagle Scout project, as well as memorial gifts in memory of Joan Gouger's husband, Bob Gouger and their daughter-in-law, Melissa Gouger, their son David's wife. The church bell is in memory of Lujeanne Gruber Holland. The bell was rescued and stored by William Holland when he happened on it at a sale. Was it happenstance or God's hand that brought the bell back?
Over the years, The Gardener's For Glory, volunteer church member gardeners tended and contributed plant material to the garden, led by Roxane Martin. They included: Ethel King, Lujeanne Holland, Joan and Paul Gouger, John and Carole Burrus, Cindy Parks, Janet and Larry Swink, Doris and Lou Tagliaferri, Alma Middleton, Pam and Duane Hubbard, Pastor Jack and Ruth Rule, and Julie and Martin Foley. Janet Swink led the group after Roxane, with the help of Ethel King.
The white dogwood tree was planted by John Burrus and has been pruned over the years into a classic espalier specimen in the form of a cross. Robins enhanced one of the arms of the cross by nesting in it. Our gentle savior Jesus must have been so pleased by those sweet songbirds.
Larry Swink built a beautiful wooden arbor alongside the pink flowering crabapple tree that anchors the front corner. Sadly, as time passed, the elements and mold deteriorated the arbor and as renovation of the garden began, it could not be repaired.
The prayer garden renovation was begun in spring, 2011. With the wettest weather in recorded history following the start of the project, it has been significantly delayed. It was wonderful to see Greg Decker returning from his home in Philadelphia where he is employed as an engineer, to work again with his Dad in the garden. Greg repaired and stained the bell housing, while Bob Decker stained the three Amish built wooden benches. In the process of the removal of the overgrown yews, the 1891 cornerstone was rediscovered. The plan for the revitalized garden includes enhancement of this historic discovery.
The walkways have been rebuilt in stone with the help of Greg McGill, Jan Decker, Marv & Joyce Aylsworth , David Gouger, Marty Foley and Jim Flechsig. The drainage has been corrected as much as possible and composted soil will be added to raise and amend the beds slightly in preparation for planting in spring of 2012.
A new white resin arched arbor now graces the entrance where the original wooden arbor stood.
The proposed plants will be in soft tones of pink, lavender, white and pale yellow. The original perennials will remain in the original form. Fragrant plants will be added.
Funding for the renovation of the prayer garden was made possible by memorial gifts as allocated by the memorial fund committee.
The prayer garden will be a place for prayerful reflection, healing and reflection for all who choose to use it.
